Response to Intervention (RtI)


This training will delve deeply into effective implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI). RtI is the practice of:

  • providing high-quality intervention matched to student needs
  • using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important instructional decisions
  • addressing student intervention as Tiers (1, 2, 3) or Levels of Intervention (Benchmark, Strategic, Intensive)
  • implementing intervention through the lenses of Time (frequency and duration) and Intensity (programs and pedagogy)

The training will also present a practical organizer that optimizes learning success for ALL students. Using a matrix format, the session will address the key aspects that influence teacher efficacy and student learning success. For each tier of intervention, the matrix format will integrate and define these key aspects: Academic Learning Time, Teaching-Learning Strategies, Assessment, Placement, Advancement, and In-Class Coaching.

3 tier structure of RtI


Tier 1

All students. Preventative and proactive. Responsive, quality instruction with ongoing progress monitoring within the general education classroom.  


Tier 2

Some students. Support that supplements but does not supplant the core curriculum and is based on student needs as identified by ongoing progress monitoring. Skills mastery and frequent assessment.


Tier 3

Few students (theoretically). Intensive and comprehensive intervention. Replaces core. High Intensity, in-depth skills analysis. Structure includes direct, interactive instruction, mastery strategies, and scaffolds. Frequent assessment.


Training will allow participants to discuss the successes and potential pitfalls associated with providing and supporting effective Responses to Intervention for all students. How do I place students? What do I do with Special Education? How do I select my teachers? How do I schedule students, especially at the middle and high schools?


Participants will participate in a one or two-day training to:

  • discuss the key aspects of providing and supporting effective Response to Intervention.
  • reflect on current implementation of RtI at the district and/or school site level.
